Cedar Elm

Ulmus crassifolia

Mature size: 50-70 ft tall
Restoration role: Fast canopy establishment

Overstory Tree
Cedar Elm, a native Central Texas riparian plant

Cedar elm establishes quickly and tolerates both Hill Country drought and periodic flooding, making it a reliable second-tier canopy tree for the outer edge of a riparian buffer, just above the immediate bank.

Its small, rough leaves and upright form provide filtered shade that lets understory shrubs and grasses establish beneath it.
