Bald cypress is the signature tree of Hill Country creeks, and for restoration purposes, the most important. Its buttressed trunk and wide, flexible root system grip limestone streambanks through flood flows that would uproot shallower-rooted trees, making it the backbone species for any bank stabilization planting.
Established cypress also throw deep shade across the channel, keeping water temperatures low enough for native fish and the invertebrates they feed on. Plant along the active bank and lower floodplain, spaced to allow the crown room to mature over 40–60 years.
